VKK-15K(KM) - Altitude Compensation Suit |
|
|
The VKK-15K(KM) is a very rare item that
I know little about. The pictures here show the suit as it is.
The appearance of it being incomplete and my previous assessment that this
was only the bottom half was incorrect. This is the complete
VKK-15K(KM). The standard Russian or Soviet flight jacket (leather
or heavy cotton/denim) would go over the top for added insulation.
The compression part of the suit is only in the bottom half, I
believe.
VKK stands for высота компенсирующий костюм - altitude compensation suit. There are three main connecting hoses which attach to female connectors within the cockpit. There is no separate pressure control valve on the suit itself - everything is controlled from within the cockpit. The suit is modeled on a space suit (probably the Baklan) because the hoses and valves are identical to those on the Baklan, which in turn, are very similar to those on the Sokol KV-2. I was able to lay the Baklan and VKK-15K side by side and my apologies for not getting a picture of them in that state. There are numerous small pockets to hold various elements of survival equipment - exactly what item goes into which pocket, I don't know. Additionally, there is a matching jacket, which I did not have the pleasure of showing with this set, however, reader Renzo was able to complete the set. See at the bottom of the page a nice display of what a VKK-15 looks like on a pilot, with both bibs and jacket, complete with mask, helmet, and harness. Also, each VKK-15K has its own serial number. Because of the rarity of this piece, value is hard to determine. The one in these pictures is incomplete (bottom half only), but is still worth from $300-$500 because it is modeled on the Baklan space suit and is in brand new condition. |
